The Ancient ToltecOver two thousand years ago, the Toltec were known throughout southern Mexico as women and men of knowledge. Anthropologists and historians have spoken of the Toltec as a race or culture, yet in fact, the Toltecs were a group of men and women that came together to create life as artists of the Spirit. They were architects, builders, healers and artists who found a new way to express their gift of love into the world. The Toltec initially came together in a place called Tollan, now called Tula, just north of what is now known as Mexico City. Here, these wise men and women came together to form community in their knowledge and wisdom. They came together as "partidos," parties or groups of men and women who were led by the nagual, the teacher and guide. They learned and grew together to become aware of "who" they really were and how to dream a life of happiness and love. Some became so powerful in their awareness and use of energy, theirs and others, that there was a separation of parties. The ones that chose to live with the right use of energy, left Tollan and went to Teothihuacan, which was becoming a center of trade for the Meso-America region of North America. As the Toltecs settled in Teotihuacan and became powerful through mastering their own awareness and forming practices centered in the heart, many followers came from all over the continent to learn their way of life. Individuals came from Central America and the North of Mexico, now known as the Southwest of the United States, to trade their wares. Yet mostly they came to be discovered by the nagual who asked them to join their party in learning the ways of the Toltec masters. These people came to realize the promise of the Toltec work, which was to transcend the realm of ordinary human awareness and attain their personal freedom. The apprentices to the nagual studied three Toltec masteries: Awareness, Transformation and Intent. The students had to have the courage to face and know themselves, and through that knowing, change their way of life. Teotihuacan remained the Toltec center of spiritual knowledge and transformation for many thousands of years. Pyramids were built to embody these teachings. The esoteric Toltec knowledge continues to be embedded in the pyramids, and holds the silent knowledge for individuals seeking freedom. With the influence of the European culture, this ancient teaching went under ground. This wisdom has since been passed down by word-of-mouth through the generations of naguals. Several lineages of naguals, to include don Carlos and don Miguel, pass the teaching in their own unique way. Luis, and the Toltec Eagle Knight lineage carried by don Miguel, teaches that the Toltec knowledge arises from the same essential unity of truth as all the sacred esoteric traditions around the world. Though it is not a religion, it honors all the spiritual teachings and masters who have taught on the earth. Though it does embrace spirit, it is most accurately described as a way of life for people who choose to live life guided by the heart. In living "love" from the Toltec teaching, one could say that it is a radical departure from the concept of love we have been taught throughout the process of our human domestication. The love most of us have come to know often feels like pain, which makes us suffer with jealousy and need, or compels us to try to control one another. It is a false image of love, originating in fear and used to protect us from the wounds we believe others inflict on us. On the other hand, the Toltec concept of Love is the unconditional Love that comes from the true "essence" of all that "Is," the Source that has created all we know in this dream of life. |
